Gertrude & Pablo

Cubism was a game she could play with her brother,
nothing was here yet,
and underneath trips to the market
and leafy trees
she would lean between bees avoiding raindrops
kneading the buttons on her old sweater
and pouting
mostly because her lips could do it so well

he would empty things out
between his knees
and notice things
puckered
with stubby fingers
twirling
the dust upon the rocks and blocks
adjusting Things-

the little finger on his right hand
tapped his nose at just the right time
to make his eye twinkle
and the sparks fell into line

like bullets from the Hotchkiss
[Early commanders, such as Charles Lanzerac, he learned,
were dismissed for apparent failures
in their implementation of the offensive spirit.]

Mothers with empty baskets
made their way through the streets,
their voices drifted up to the open windows
and he put That inside too

his sister sniffs the words:
world becomes whorled

and spins like a dizzy old man
who shared nothing of himself
and died just at the time he was born.

Does this lead to Guernica? I think Guernica is pivotal, like the Waste land is. Like Joyce's Ulysses Pivotal no. Seminal? you know Important. can't escape it.

I think Guernica should be everywhere these days -- to reminds us of the horror of War.

I can't help but think that Picasso was born artistically in Guernica and everything that came after was just for money. I mean I don't know if its true but after thinking about this that is where it takes me.

And oddly Gertrude was right there with him.

    Still thinking about this...

    I love this:

the little finger on his right hand
tapped his nose at just the right time
    to make his eye twinkle
and the sparks fell into line

    that is so effing magical.

Gertrude Stein and Pablo Picasso definitely both innovators and experimenters -- they are the allegorical symbols here aren't they?

I don't know Hotchkiss or Lanzarec but they sure sound good close together like that ( and will do my research to see where they fit into the storyboard).

last two stanzas are sad and so good.

    I love this pome. Surprised?

    xo

oh yeah good luck in the contest.

hummm.... not real sure what you were getting at here. First I thought something special was occurring between sister and brother but halfway through you seemed to change direction.

The Art of Words and of Visual ...

often married itself in friendship. You write both.

Picasso had a funny idea of women, perhaps his sister had something to do with that...I like your words better than his paintings I would rather sigh over a Rembrandt anyday C
