Does any love, other than the unconditional kind, last forever?
She was so sure that they were meant to be together for all time.
His promises of ardent, passionate, honest love had never rung false.
Then again, she’d been so sure back then.
Had he been lying, she might never have known.
Her heart had been there. Where was his? Hers had never once faltered.
She was no longer the naïve girl she’d been, but her heart was still there.
Now that he was gone, her current feelings made little sense.
Friends advised her to forget; but she could not deny, could not pretend.
Neither did she regret all they’d once shared.
She held no grudges, felt no hatred, for she was not like most people.
No scapegoat could relieve her of a broken heart, an ending.
Drops of wet wistful longing leaked from her eyes, streaked her blotchy cheeks.
Time was meaningless and yet, like her heart, it never once faltered.
Whisked away from her past, with few alternatives, she continued the habit of living.
Until her life regained meaning. Again, she began to learn the art of happiness.
Her first love had not been an ending, but an introduction to heartbreak and wonder.
