Great White ...

My baby was on his own
First apartment, second floor
We moved his furniture
Mom and he discuss color, curtains
The balcony overlooked lagoon
Sparkled and danced in the sunlight
A gentle toss of white bread flakes
Casting bread upon the water
The ducks left wakes
Mergansers and mallards
Plain white ones, too
Pecked bread and each other
Bream began to boil
Fingerlings and cookies
Did you know painted turtles
Like white bread?
I started a party
Became a brawl
And the bouncer flew in
crane necked stretched
And speared and gulped
Startled bream
How could fluffy white feathers
Be so belligerent?
But the ducks were no longer welcome
The fish fled, turtles ducked
The crane goose stepped
in his floating kill zone
Of sodden wheat
Rarely missing...
I rolled the dough into balls
to flick and slowly sink
Fish at depth gambled
And lost; Egret had eagle eyes
He was wise
Enough to see a good place to fish
But like most of us
The great white heron showed
No gratitude
For help from above

Author notes

I don't really know what bird he was. There is a white egret, and a white heron that derives from the great blue heron, and cranes. But I tinkered with him for a half hour and he took a dozen bream, known also as sunfish, bluegills, red ears. The fish stay small if the pond is overcrowded.http://fishing.about.com/od/bream/a/bluegill.htm

    What an adventure...

You just took me on! This is a great write. It held me captivated from the start. Love your choice of words and how the images just leapt off the page. I love nature & am amazed at the manifold creatures Father created & how they live. Bravo for this! This sounds like a real life story poem & if so someone has a wonderful & exciting place to live!

I enjoyed the change of focus here, from the particular of new apartment to the lagoon, and the observation of pond life. A snapshot of time frozen in your poem. Nice.

hmmm..gratitude. There's gratitude and then there's GRATITUDE. Can I say that word one more time maybe.
I'm thinking just like the painted turtles I think. I like white bread too. I've no idea what bream means.
    Tell me fisherman, I'm clueless.
Parable came through loud and clear.
    Thank you too, for everything.

I added a link to the AC so if anyone else is curious. Funny thing, bream is an english fish, and what I called bream are sunfish. I learned alot answering your question. Funny thing- they spawn on the full moon for several months in a row.
