Homecomings

Missing image
Weary and haggard when life took me on the road,
one image always clothed me in joy,
the sight of the Eucalyptus along the freeway,
which had been there for decades.
It was the one constant from all my life
no matter where I traveled or how far I had gone.

Always the welcoming fingers of nature
bearing their greeting on my heart,
standing as symbols
of how soon I would reunited with the ones I love,
while their scent guided me the rest of the way.

Through every page of my past,
somewhere the Eucalyptus lined my memory,
reminding how there was at least one thing in my world
that was forever a sign of hope.

As a child I rode past them on field trips in a bus,
being an adult to drive beyond them on my way to work,
but they never left my mind as pillars,
ever looking for the Eucalyptus spirit in another's eyes,
those silent senses of assurance,
who like the trees
had so often
protected me against some wind of trouble.

Your loving discription of the Eucalyptus finds a reflection here in Canada with our maple trees that line the avenues of so many of our suburbs in the eastern provinces. In the summers they become great shady canyons and soon( even slowly now) they will burst into spectacular firey clouds of scarlet and gold!
If you asked most folks from here they may well say their most comforting childhood memories are playing in heaps of aromatic autumn leaves on bright October afternoons.

    Beautiful Sentiments, Poet!!!

I really enjoyed reading this peaceful write, it filled me with a serne calm and brought back reminders of another place, where I also lived near this great marvelous tree. Your poem softly touches the heart with symbolic memories of everything solid, faithful and true in life... Great job, and best wishes in the contest!!! -Cyn
