Once in a land very far away
Was a forest cool and green.
In the forest many animals lived,
Some you would never have seen.
From bluebirds to bees, butterflies, bears -
The animals all dwelt in peace
They all worked together, and had fun,
So none were left out in the least.
But then one day, along did come
Humans with giant machines,
They cut down all the animal’s trees
Their homes were in s-m-i-t-h-e-r-e-e-n-s.
The animals then were very upset –
That was it - they had no other choice
They packed up all their bags and left –
They’d have to go live somewhere else.
The humans returned with their huge machines,
And started to build up the land
The ground was heating up real hot,
Now that the trees were band.
The termites then held a great meeting, and said:
“Look at this place that we’ve found!
Why don’t we move it right away –
There’s lots of lovely, hot ground!”
On the land the humans build many houses
They filled up all the space,
Then moved into their brand new homes
They said: “Trees? No! They’re a disgrace!”
The termites gnawed away at the houses –
That were poorly made of wood
The ground was getting steadily hotter,
The termites said: ‘Oh, good!”
Others were also feeling the heat –
The humans were beginning to sweat
Installed they got huge air conditioning systems
All before the sun had set.
The systems on high - now the humans were happy
But there was a very big error:
Pollution was being released into the air –
Green house gases cause lots of terror.
The ozone layer was beginning to lessen,
And on the other side of the planet
Because of this terrible global warming
Penguins said: “We may as well can it,” –
Polar ice caps were melting at a very high rate
The sun burns at a high cost,
And pollution was fogging up the whole land,
Oh dear! Was everything lost?
But a young girl, named Lucy, looked outside one day
She said: “No! This must not be!
Look what we’ve done to our wonderful world –
We are not environment friendly!
She put on a hat, and outside her house
She found a patch of good soil
She bought some tree seedlings and a big shovel
And all the day did she toil.
Her neighbours looked over the fence and said:
“Wow! Come look at little Lucy!
What is she doing? She’s been there all day!
Why, look – she has planted a tree!”
“I’ve got some spare seedlings,” Lucy told them all,
“They’re lovely and fresh and alive.
If you plant them, they’ll help give your house shade
Trees help us breathe to survive.”
So they all took some seedlings, and went straight to work
They had a lot of great fun.
And over the years, the seedlings grew up -
And shaded them all from the sun.
The air con.s were no longer needed because
Of the cool shade that the trees did give them
Air con.s thrown away, they went out to play –
For all did happily live, then.
The humans weren’t the only ones happy, then
For on that very next day,
Some bluebirds, who saw the lovely, cool trees, said:
“Let’s move back there to stay!”
So that is the story of the once cool, green forest
Though destroyed, again all was okay
Because of Lucy’s great idea, the green
Environment was going to stay.
Author notes
I wrote this poem for a children's book I made in grade 9 to alert yougsters of what cutting down trees and destroying the environment does to our world.

this is very long but good!

Wonderful tale to pass on awareness in terms
the younger generation can understand.
It starts in our own backyards, the healing,
and I feel that is what is being shown here.
