Troubled Times

Give back the boys of long ago,
when hunger killed
and panic flowed.

Lay down the guns
that stole our sons
and blow the pipes, then beat the drums.

With tattered pride
and bloodied hearts,
they gave their lives and stole the march.

So, freedom cost
a princely sum,
they stood and faced the faceless ones.

A childhood friend,
a schoolboy dare,
they fought together... everywhere.

A mother's son,
a wife's sweet one,
felt the weight of death's embrace... now done.

Very much my 100% favourite out of all entries I've read so far in this contest; you had enough knowledge to back up what you were writing about, and, as a result, told the story of the lives of many from years ago in ireland

Whoa, that was carefully measured meter- read aloud, there's not a hitch. Also for me, you hit the bullseye on Cannon's request. Feels like an open wound. Uncommonly good.

This said a lot! And I like the way it "flowed" almost like to a drum beat. A wonderful write. It did me good to read this. Well done.

The rhythm and rhyme here is stellar, and the poem sings to me. Very patriotic, and such a tribute to those who have sacrificed their lives, come home torn...for our liberties!

Excellent! Lyrical! I wish you well in the Comp.

    Much Love ♥

This is so strong, the patriotism in this is palpable and it fits the song so very well. dia dhuit ma chara slan C
