The year is 1945 and they are planting memories
with leaves that fall as tears do for a lost hero
his little girl of five with pleated skirt and knee-high socks
skips gaily, tipping leaves with tops of patent leather shoes
giggling in a way that make sombre souls smile without realising
Now the year is 2008 and the grandmother of five
watches her grand daughters play hopscotch
protected by the trees she planted for a daddy killed in war
she runs wrinkled hands over bark and remembers all that was lost
in that season of deciduous love
letting the falling leaves, cover that of a daughter’s tears

Oh my goodness, that ending
had me in tears. How you got
THAT.. out of the picture, is
truly amazing. You hold much
wisdom, and it shines through
your words. This piece gripped
my heart from the very first
line, and each line tugged
harder as I read on.
Phenomenal piece,
and congrats on the gold
