Deprive us of our birthright and strip us of our pride;
Detach yourself completely;
Pretend you never lied.
To understand your reasons for leaving us behind;
You’re Selfishness! Deception! Destroyed our children's lives.
I see their faces fading;
I watch their eyes subdued.
The laughter they once cherished is missing and removed.
I try so hard to pour them with all my precious love,
But all their dreams have faded and vanished like a dove.
Despite my endless showering of unconditional love;
Our children feel Betrayed! Detached! Removed! Unloved!
I wonder how you sleep at night;
I wonder what you dream.
Can’t you feel their agony?
Angels without wings!
Repairing has its battles;
It takes its toll on youth,
And everything delivered has now become untruth!
But don’t despair my husband:
Don’t lose another sleep,
For fate delivers justly!
The price is always steep!
In time it tackles fairly,
And takes its priceless dues.
Your debts are due for payment with interest multiplied:
And every action rendered delivers magnified.
The years have passed so quickly and now our boys are men!
They’ve learnt to live without you; and now tis you need’s them!
Your need for them has caught you; completely unaware!
How treacherous your journey;
I wish that I could care!
The clock is always ticking!
Your crime has rendered debt!
And bankruptcy your debt is due!
How twisted is the net.
Believe me when I say;
I can’t believe its true…
That even after all this crime;
I truly feel for you!!
How often have you cried and felt betrayed?

Excellent!
The meter of this poem was amazing. Can you tell me what kind of poem this is? I'd like to try my hand at it. The message and meaning are very powerful and gripping, too. Such a universal story - the father who gives too little attention when the kids need it most, then wants attention from his kids when they have long since stopped caring about him. Of course, by then it's too late. The same thing happened to my father. I was just writing about it this morning while working on his autobiography so it's quite a coincidence that I would find this poem today.
You commented on my poem That We Were Kind and said it left you speechless. This poem has done the same to me. It was clear, accessible and profound. I am sorry though for the pain contained in it, both yours and your children. You're very talented. I've found another favorite writer here. Thanks.

The Debt
Thank you for taking the time to read and comment on my poem "The Debt". It's quite amazing how this subject touches so many. Pain is an emotion that can "make or break" the mind and soul of all. In my life however it has "made' rather than "broken" my spirit; and I am thrilled that my poem touched a chord in your life.
I am quite new on the site and am still feeling my way around; so please be patient with me. I am hoping to make the most of it as soon as I am familiar with using the site effectively.
