Only Human

In the realm of reality
Criticism is at the tip of every tongue
Judgmental eyes follow us all around
Nail biting nervousness haunts us

Stacks of excuses we keep handy
Reasons we dig for a scapegoat
While perfectionism yells at us
For being mistakably only human

Listening to daily rhythms
Life is a laid routine
Trials we hit bull’s eye
Ending with buckets of tears
For all the misses

Dwelling on barren lands of pity
Taking a train to guilty trips
Dining with the devil of veracity
Mistakes we talk about
We let regrets closer to our heart

Past we keep on tight leash
Problems we cry over
Instead of gathering smiles over solutions
We often forget to breathe

Organized days in order
Lined up all the hours
We fight to create our destiny
With no room for tricks of life
To making us a believer
Of us being only human

Life passes by with the ticking clock
No time to smell the fresh flowers
No time to sip from freshly brewed coffee
For we are breathing breaths of life
Getting stale winning over perfection

Just a moment if we took
To take a little peek
On a childhood dreamland we step back
Where we created our messes
And still had time to collect butterfly smiles

What goes wrong?
Where life takes a turn?
How we become what we’d sworn not to be?

Perhaps as childhood dreams are eroded
Growing in time machine we lose the keys to imagination
The fears we often so feared
Before we knew by them we’re imprisoned
We're thrown at the mercy of the worst critique in the world
Ourselves as we’ve defined us to be a perfectionist

At the end of the day we need to ask ourselves
Is it worth losing ourselves?
Only if we could once again learn to live
Admit to our faults
We will find the smiling truth
We are perfect creation of god
Human allowed to making mistakes
For we too have the right to create happy memories

Author notes

Inspiration from the following quote by Dr. David M. Burns –
1. Remember that fear always lurks behind perfectionism. Confronting your fears and allowing yourself the right to be human can, paradoxically, make you a far happier and more productive person.

I love the whole poem, but that stanza really struck me with so much deep meaning. Nice job, and thanks so much for entering my contest. Blessings, Patty

Your poem is like a journey which leads to another journey. It is very thought-provoking and those thoughts linger long after the last line has been read. I love your subtle uses of alliteration through-out the poem. The flow is a bit disjointed but I love that because so is the journey. Realising what is wrong is never a smoothe path, I don't think. Thanks for sharing this Best of luck in the contest!
