Honest Abe went to his grave having accomplished much,
he kept the Union strong in force though men would have it bust
Abolition he brought about, freed many souls,
endured many sleepless nights tossing to & fro.
Suffered through the Civil War,
where brother fought with brother;
lived to see it finally end before he lost his life,
leaving behind Mary Todd his wife.
Redefined what a Republic should be,
home of the brave & the free;
equal all & represented, no loop holes, no pretenses,
one nation under the Creator, fully righteous legislators.
Savior of the United States,
with liberty for all;
he mandated a blockade to protect from total fall,
he’s remembered as the Great Emancipator, sealer of many fates

Author notes
Not a big history or political buff, but I remember studying about Abraham Lincoln & being amazed at his fortitude & courage in the midst of personal & historic tragedy. This is my humble tribute to the First & perhaps only truly Republican President!

You know ...
you just might be right. All the other Republican Presidents were flawed, one way or another, although none as thoroughly as the present one, or the one running as a Republican who really isn't one. -
A wonderful poem, about "Honest Abe" we sure could use some honesty in our leaders these days. Very well done, I enjoyed this poem very much!

The greatest of your American presidents? Well greater than any you have had for a while.
I like this write.

A wonderful tribute to Honest Abe, my friend. Well done -- a true republican if I ever heard of one!! Good luck in the contest, I'm sure you'll do well.

I really didn't know much about old abe but I guess that doesn't matter. I enjoyed the conviction and adoration in your words and I love the way you have expressed yourself and the topic. Cheers

Wow.... this fits almost perfectly with my marching band show this year... lol it's a patriotic theme, but it's based off Kennedy's four freedom's speech... Anyway, this is very good I love the way that it's got facts in it and that it is a tribute to one of the U.S.'s greatest leaders. Wonderful!

Great !
You have crafted an interesting tribute to one of the most influentual Presidents our Union has ever seen. By his faith and principles he DID make a difference to make our nation a better place under the guidence and blessing of God. I wish there were more men of integrity of his calibur willing to lead this country once again. Thanks for sharing!

The poem has a good flow & an almost martial beat & scan to it. You have made good use of assonance & para-rhyme. I have said before you have the innate abilities & instincts of a true poet & songwriter. The penultimate lines in each stanza all have a peculiar phonetic feel to them. In the last stanza all of those percussive soft dental & dental mute sounds (d's & t's) give it an almost military feel. You have done the same thing with the second stanza but with the labial V & F phonemes. This a good contest entry.
Well, considering we abolished slavery first (Wilberforce), I think it is odd that Lincoln (Wasn't he a slave owner?) claims to have abolished it. My knowledge of American history is vague at best, so I am unable to comment really. Why was he called Honest Abe ? I don't know the difference between republicans & democrats either. I wonder what Honest Abe would have thought of U.S. foreign policy now? A single country that uses 25% of the worlds resources!

Very powerful!
WOW! A neat poem about "Honset Abe!" Very good images and a fine, interesting statement! I've always liked the History of Abe Lincoln and this concise poem certainly does him justice!
