Priceless

Dear Rach,

I first met you on the side of the road
You were scared and alone
I wanted to take you home

I knew I couldn't do that though
so I brought you things instead
Fruit, chocolate and a hood for your head

You sat with your dusty old blanket
and I promised you there and then
that I would come back to visit again

Your sparkly eyes always amaze me
lighting up to say thank you
even when no thanks is due

You touch me with your bravery
and the way you like to sing
No matter what life brings

You and I speak different words aloud
but our hearts beat just the same
Isn't that true friendships' aim?

Thank you for every hug you send
I hope life brings you a happy end
love from Ellie, your forever friend


Author notes

This is dedicated to a girl who begs near my house. She is Romanian and she has a beautiful heart and soul. Her life is not as lucky as mine so I bring her things to make her smile and make things easier for a little while. In return, she sings little merry songs. Her bravery, hope and little songs touch me deeply, make me feel warm and safe and like I never want to stop smiling. She is an inspiration and even though we're not related, she is most definitely my sister.

    you never fail...

    you never fail to surprise me Ellie; but pleasantly so. I can't believe that you would do this for this little girl; it is so irresponsible, and cruel of her parents to have her out begging every moment of the day ; and very few would take the time to befriend her, and attempt to make her feel at home in our country. you're a little kiddo!

    This is an outstanding poem and you are an outstanding person! You give her gifts and she gives you songs! My favorite lines are "our hearts beat just the same" and "your forever friend."
