Autumn Longing

Take me down, morning sun
I have barely risen and already felt too much.
Take me up, you autumn birds
oh, I would that flight could take me home
and out of the place where I am nothing but my own.

I was born to be another's all;
born to give myself away in full,
but each time I try I seem to fail
and wake up ever further from the hope.

I was made from dirt to gold
in a moment that is kept a secret still,
held until the day I am made whole.
But the gold in me is a lonely gate,
built high upon this mountain pass
aching for love to bring its glorious kiss.

So take me down, morning sun,
I am alone in a place now so far gone.
Take me up, you colored trees
oh, I would that she would run from among you
to finally stand arm in arm with me.

Author notes

Two years and counting, and still I stand waiting for her to move. This morning in particular comes hard and full of that aching loneliness that all who have loved and been loved only to lose that return of love know. As David the Psalmist wrote so long ago, "Oh, that I had the wings of a dove! I would fly away and be at rest - I would flee far away and stay in the desert"

But I am here, and she is so painfully close yet massively distant. And still I wait.
