Broken fingers
A tattered glove
He sleeps in a cardboard box
And dreams of love
An angry cop kicked him in the ribs
while he wandered down Wabash
Busted nose
His breath warms the air
Hole riddled coat his blanket
Dreaming of something more than those
sad things.
Homeless boy you sleep and dream
and darkly seem
to whisper hopefully under your breath
muttering a name
forgetting upon the waking
a name
her name
"Beaten boy, what makes you happy?"
Broken fingers cradling a kind cup of joe
He smiles
And nods at me
"I'm in love with my wife."
I frowned and asked if his wife was about
He smiled and sipped his coffee
As the knowing man controls the bet
"She's not here."
"Where is she?"
"Haven't met her yet."

great job! Love the subject you chose to write about and the story you painted with your words, only a small suggestion:
"to whisper hopefully under you breath" I think "you" is meant to be "your".....thank you for taking the time to enter! -
Hah, wow. This is wonderfull. I can feel the belivability in this piece, a ton of truth and such a heart-warming story, even without a "happy ending" Great job!

A wonderful poem!
But which prompt does it deal with? It does tug at one's heartstrings.
