harvest

summer barely clings to the
surface now, lingering within
our freckles & scabs,

the autumn chill has alchemized
the countryside we drive through,
golden cornstalks suffering the wind’s agitation
a final time before the plow
reaps upon their rustling corpses.

a farmer’s crackled face
frowns at the cloudless sky
as the car rumbles past
a lifeless bird, its body
splattered across the road,
like an art project colored
outside the lines,
a broken wing jutting up
as a grotesque salutation.

this whole earth is dying,
grinding on its axis & unsettling
the dust beneath our tires,
but we feel drunk off that
thrill of flight in the gut,
earth’s last exhalation of summer,
& that anxious awareness of
being alive.

HOPE4REVOLUTION

so if you've read any of my really old stuff on here you'll see that i plagiarized myself quite a bit. basically, i'm extracting the parts i like from old poems that i no longer like. i just thought i'd mention that.

I love this... it reminds me so much of the area that I live in. It comes off as such a hippie poem, with I love. It reminds me of a few poems that I've written recently. Great work.

I really liked this to the point where I got shivers and I felt I was part of the poem, standing next to the farmer and feeling his disappointment. Or glancing at the bird and just wanting to cry. Wow, great job, honestly... I loved it. =]

I've always loved poetry about autumn and the harvest. The ending is pretty surprising to say the least. It's like you almost expect the end to get more calm due to it's apparent contrast with the previous stanza, then the last line wakes you up in such a great way. Nice work!
