golden trees frame the rocky shoreline,
and I dip my toe into the cold clear water.
ducks beg for breadcrumbs
and mountains hug the pristine lake.
I climb a tree and think of you.
I cannot be sure that I have ever seen a place
more beautiful than this.
I long only for you to share it.
later the city lights hover on the horizon
like fireflies.
the twinkling reminds me of your eyes,
especially when you laugh.
I imagine myself lost in them again.
Every day I wish you could be here.
Not just because I want to see you -
but because you need to see this place.
Author notes
Inspired by Wanaka and the lights of Dunedin as you approach the city.
