on gunsmoke air; whispers of
horrible happenings too
tainted to disrupt the
vacant stares from
thousands of miles away.
Shattered innocence mixed with
blood, blankets the floors and
hearts of those who walk the
broken halls of a breached safe
zone. Thousands of
screaming questions tighten
on this place like a
brand new chain.
...Shhh...
These words will soon erupt
from the awed mouths of those
who felt bullets rain
down...
They will be screamed by the
quivering parents whose thoughts
will be forever tortured
by the what has been; by what could
have been...
From miles around these words
will be screamed, whispered
called out in pain and
agony as thirteen stolen lives
shoot across the world...
"Where can we be safe?"
Author notes
This contest really made me think about all the different perspectives that I could have written from; I wrote from the perspective of someone that perhaps walked through the school after the shooting (I was reading Nineteen Minutes bu Jodi Picoult at the time so that also helped) and I remember how this changed the US. It changed school and all of our lives like every other horrible happening since then and before then has.
I hoped I did these people some justice
I'm sorry I didn't choose a specific prompt but I guess this could also go under the catergory of someone who survived this ordeal

An amazing write.

This was a great dedication to the victims of school shootings. I really loved how this piece ended with a question. It was rousing and really forces the reader to sink into your message. From the beginning we've always been taught that you can be safe in school but then a shooting takes place and our worlds are just rocked violently. It's so terrible to see something like that happen and I think your piece really captured that desolation of people being forced into death too young.
