gray as steel
sky presses down
in between the cracks and fractures
of steepled spires of trees
right down to the bud
bearing down to release its petal’d wings
in spite of rage and horrible stage
a baby born in a bathroom
of a shelter
during the storm
come what may
in force of nature
there is hope
breast-stroking
against a maelstrom
toppled dynasties
genocide, cultural holocausts
have not drowned out
the fragile cry
of new beginnings
scrolls up through eye
and sty of devastation
Author notes
an evacuee from Calhoun County gave birth to a girl in the restroom of a shelter

What a story of great endurance retold through the format of your poem. It is a wonderful testimony to the meaning of the word, thank you so much.

This is an intense portrayal of such horrific & miraculous events coinciding, my Friend. So many life~affirming experiences you've been through, dear Scribe. Good luck in the contest, Sweetie.
