The horror struck, sky burnt away,
Some of us decided to stay -
Watching "Ike" have his evil way
On Texas, this God-awful day.
Firefighters worked to help us all,
Old folk and dogs, as they walked tall
So brave, each took our breath away,
They, unlike us, just had to stay
Watching the TV pics and news
Gives the world almighty blues
Nature's forces stronger than us
Our homes and hopes within their crush.
Presidents remain powerless
To stop, restrain, such season's mess.
But kill they will away from home
Giving soldiers a distant tomb.
Yet voters now can think again
As syrup-sweet words on you rain.
November, season of your vote,
Vote then for sense, decry gun-boat.

Hmmm, I'm not so sure about this one Don. There's still a lot of evil dudes in the world that need their ass kicked. That imbecile in Zimbabwe, I'd put him at the top of the list. Say what you want about Ian Smith, he wasn't 1% as bad as Mugabe. The idiots in Darfur who live for innocent slaughter... someone should go in there with .30 cals blazing and drop some goombas in their tracks. Angola the same. My God, if you lived under those conditions you'd PRAY that someone would come from afar to effect your salvation.
I would.

Quite a serious and thoughtful piece of work here guv. I must say it is really quite apt. Great work.

This is so true. We all need to vote in November for who we think will make a good president. This poem is a very well written. And tells a story of a bad time for the people who stayed and survived Ike. Thanks for sharing

interesting and the message is clear. an interesting correlation between disasters is well expressed

did you see the one home left standing? It's not livable and all of her sweet neighbors were wiped out. So sad as is the war and all of those lives lost. The write portrayed it all so well and with great rhyme too ...

The Scream,I have actually seen a reproduction of that picture in a friends home many times and it chills me to the bone. The colors the technique the misery of it. These people had they're own reasons for staying I bristled when Fema or the media belittled them.Katrina was such a fiasco many lost lives while leaving too. My heart goes out to all. I am not a war Hawk my friend however as much as Vietnam cost me and mine My family is so full of brave military men who have given so much . I say as you we need to think before we enter, but protect this country we must. I enjoyed your poem very much and the message was presented beautifully and well taken.

In the end we have brave military men participating in politician's wild dreams of power.

No truer words spoken. I'm sure many feel like that scream face now. Nature's devastation again. Man is powerless against nature, but caring and compassion can rescue home. You might enjoy my "Blue Shadows".

A great contemporary interpretation of "The Scream" with some definite views on the leadership in your country. I liked the change in focus and I pray for those effected by Hurricane Ike. Good luck in the contest
