The Tomato

Missing image

As a child, we lived in an old farm house, in the country. One day my father was watering with a hose outside the kitchen window where my mom was doing dishes. My mom threw a glass of water through the window screen and hit my father. My father then squirted her with the hose, so she closed the window.

My father then brought the hose in through the kitchen door and squirted my mom. The three of us kids were laughing and screaming so he squirted us.

My mom then picked up a tomato and hit my dad with it then he squirted her. Well then, all of us kids jumped in throwing tomatoes at our dad.

After it was all over, we had a hell of a mess to clean up, but it was worth it, we all had such a fun time.

But wait!!!

A couple of weeks later, there was a terrible smell in the house. It seems, one of the tomatoes found its way into a curtain where the curtain was tied, and stayed there out of sight until it rotted.

When we found the source of the smell, it brought back, one of our fondest memories of our whole family having fun together.

I enjoyed this read allot. I could just see this happening as though I was there and the poem leaves a really warm feeling of the family having fun. It is memories like these that are so simple but stand out so completely that make life so enjoyable in retrospect.

thanks for your entry and best of luck in the contest judging.

This is so cute and a wonderful thought
for this contest. Memories like these
are sometimes so far and few in between.
Not everybody gets to have a fun-filled
childhood since we all have different
lifestyles and things that we are enduring
in our lives. But, just reading something
like this is a great way to relax and know
that somewhere out there, is a fun-filled
place. Even if it's deep in the back of
    your mind.

Thanks a lot for sharing this
piece here and all the best to you with it
in this contest! Good luck to you!

Haha, that's sweet. I was about to tell you that there was a poem I just read a few minutes ago that reminded me of this and was going to tell you that you should read it, then I went back to look for the author and it was your poem and you The Children Forever one. I suppose you already know that they connect though so there isn't any use in telling you that now. My Mother and I used to make deviled eggs for my brother's Boy Scout meetings when I suddenly came upon the epiphany that chickens came from eggs and that we must be killing chickens. So I stole one of the eggs from the pot and hid it in my room. I wrapped it up in a shirt to make sure it stayed warm. Me and my brother shared a room and one day he inquired as to why I had rolled up shirt on my shelf to which I gave the lie I always used as a child, that it was a Christmas gift and he couldn't look at it because it was a surprise. He didn't believe me but he didn't bother inquiring further. My Dad smelled the egg after a few weeks though and needless to say I never hatched any chickens. I don't exactly know what I was planning on doing with the chicken once it had hatched, but I was determined. That's the best childhood memory I can think of that involves all my family and not just me and my brother, but I know we had a lot of snow ball fights.

hahaha Yeah, some of the crazy things we do when children can be some of the most precious memories for us as adults. Sometimes it just takes something to trigger our memory to bring them back. I hope I had a hand in yours.

Sinse you read "Onion" as well, if we keep it going with your egg, we should have a salad in no time.

      Thanks
      Don
