W: I have to be the Dominant, I can’t be the sub or switch.. I just can’t. This month's centrefold feature is a glimpse into the mysterious world of Shibari. DL's investigative journalist has been talking to Shibari Masters and their jujun.
 
Shibari best translates as either "weaving" or "wrapping in ropes". Both translations refer to the interaction between ropes, the mind and the Ki energy meridians in the human body. Ki (or Chi in Chinese) is the energy of life; meridians are the channels, through which this energy flows. And since Ki - in Oriental philosophy - controls life inside the body as well as the interaction between the body and its environment, Japanese bondage has a direct influence on life. Ki can only flow and create a healthy situation through the eternal pattern of changes between Yin and Yang. The techniques strive to influence this pattern through magnifying both the Yin and Yang position on many different levels.
 
A 17th century High Priest of the school, Nissei, was a decadent, power-hungry man only interested in money, power and women. Under his reign members of the high social classes would gather in this school, tie up naked women in subdued and humiliating positions and leave them tied long enough to enjoy them and make drawings of them while in bondage, thus producing pornographic pictures. These gatherings were called "komon sarashi shibari". Very rare examples of such drawings have surfaced in Ukiyo-e (17th century erotic woodblock print) collections.

While this is one of the very few documented ancient uses of bondage as an erotic technique, the fact that such gatherings existed in Kyoto supports undocumented rumours about Samurai in rural areas tying up women and exposing them for erotic amusement. At these gatherings apparently bondage techniques were used, borrowed from Hojo Jitsu (the art of tying and transporting prisoners), Japanese rope torture techniques (Kinbaku) and Sarashi (the public display of criminals). That is where the martial arts roots (if any) of Japanese bondage are believed to originate from. Although often portrayed as such, there is no evidence of a direct, linear connection between Shibari and what is known as "soft weapon techniques" in most martial arts, of which Hojo Jitsu is one.
 
Shibari involves tying a jujun (one who submits to the rope) in intricate patterns, usually with several pieces of thin rope. Shibari differs from Western bondage in that, instead of just immobilizing or restraining the bottom, the bottom gains pleasure from being under pressure and strain of the ropes. The aesthetics of the bound person's position are also important: in particular, for its use of asymmetric positions to heighten the psychological impact of bondage. Shibari, both beautiful and functional, is suited to any body type the focus is the interaction between the personality of the rope and that of the jujun.

This is an unusually sensible and serious question for these pages, I will answer as best I can. As an entrepreneur/businessman, you already have a lot of the skill-set in place for running a business, therefore there is little I can advise you in that area. What I can advise is that you do research locally. Check out if there is an interest locally. How many people in your chosen area have an interest or are actually actively involved in the scene? Network with them. Do your market research based on their preferences. Try and tailor the club to what these people, who will be your core customer want, otherwise you will either lose or not be able to establish clientele. Club location is also important. You did not state whether you have relocated to a smaller town or a larger city and this in itself may be crucial to the prosperity and longevity of your club. You are more likely to gain a larger client base if in the centre of a larger city, which will have a prospective catchment of people within the city and also people coming in from close, outlying towns, which you wouldn’t have in a smaller, less densely populated area.

The most crucial issue for you to investigate however, is the Planning Permission and Licenses required from your Local Authority. Remember, BDSM/Fetish is very much an underground niche, one that is often very much looked down upon not only by the general public, but more so by the establishment and those in authority, even though the notion that BDSM and fetishes are immoral is an outmoded and old fashioned skewed viewpoint, it is still a viewpoint that is still very prevalent in areas where the Local Authority or council is run by what would be deemed as representatives who have a very ‘moral’ agenda and viewpoint. It is essential you do your research on this, specific to where you want to open your club and you may well have to be very careful how you present the club at such planning and licensing meetings, though I am sure there are those out there, perhaps even just a good lawyer, who could help and advise you with this.

In conclusion, despite it’s popularity, BDSM is still very much a niche and a very limited niche at that in terms of available numbers, therefore neither overnight nor huge, burgeoning success can be expected nor guaranteed, though if you do your homework and go about everything correctly then I don’t doubt that a satisfyingly successful business is achievable.

First of all may I take this opportunity, as a retired person to praise your magazine and to wish you every success in the future. In my youth one could find ‘bondage magazines’ but they were quite tawdry affairs that only served to reinforce the impression that there was something inherently dangerous about this lifestyle.

As I am now in my eighties I am no longer involved in what is now called the “scene” but I would like to share with you a reminiscence from my earlier years.

In 1954 I was a young stockbroker in the City, just beginning to climb the ladder of success. One evening I decided to explore some of the bars and clubs on the edge of the financial district.

As I was walking down a side street between two main thoroughfares I spied a large suited man standing by an unremarkable doorway. I approached and asked if this was some sort of private club. The club was dimly lit and smoky with a small, low, stage in one corner. I took a seat at an empty table and a waitress came over to me. As she approached I almost choked. As I sat, whiskey and water in hand, the lights dimmed even further; leaving a single spotlight illuminating the centre of the stage. Even now, more than half a century later, the tableau remains engraved into my mind; the now silent club, the naked young woman, and my heartbeat echoing in my ears.

A black clad gentleman walked out of the wings, his patent leather boots sparkling in the spotlight. In one hand he held a loosely coiled whip which he allowed to unfurl onto the floor. With a nod towards the audience, the whipman turned to the young woman and cracked the whip, its speeding tip cutting into her smooth white skin. The woman flinched, but did not cry out. For precisely ten times the whip cracked and ten lines appeared across milky skin. The whipman recoiled the whip and stepped to the side of the stage to the sound of appreciative applause.

Moments later the man returned empty handed to stand in front of the still kneeling woman. He reached down and grasped her hair, lifting her face up to look at him. He pulled her face close to his black trousers and nodded at her. The young woman unbuttoned his fly and released his burgeoning penis. Now, as I look back on my adult life, I attribute my involvement in the joys of sadism to that night. I was transferred soon after the events of that night, so did not return. Years later, when I was once more in the city, I sought out the club but it had evidently been closed down.
