Night Over the Mountains

A Cuban reflection

Remember the mountains

Always remember the heights

Close to the moon

Close to the stars

In the purest coldest air

Close to God

For He is One

At night in the mountains

The moon and stars

Nearer than lights

In distant valleys

Nearer than humans

As near as God

For He is One

Now far from the mountains

Caged in air so damp

One drowns in air

One drowns in water

One drowns in heat

In prison for God

For He is One

So distant, no mountains

Captured by savages

Choking on disrespect

Choking on vomit

Choking on anger

Far off from God

If there is One

I dream of the mountains

Going one day to fight

To conquer

To repay this drowning

To return in vengeance

Avenging for God

What has been done

Back to the mountains

I can never return

Never revert

Never go back

That man is dead who was

Close to God

If there was one.

vic- this is strong, heavy poetry-
with a definitive anger and shame
that rides its back, bristles at touch- the last stanza of an inability to go back
sums so much up- both literally (he is a captive) and figuratively (for him everything is changed and he has been humiliated)
    the water torture noted.
    a strong write
good to find you here- and this

I take this to be the Guantanamo Bay inmate, and the resentment bred into him by his captors. For they have sown the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind.
