Don't say a word
We have been taught
Of politics, religion, sex.
We ought
To know such topics
Are controversial
And just might offend.
We learn to pretend
That small talk
Is really conversation…
But it's an abomination
To talk totally triviality –
The weather, perhaps –
When I long to know
Your views on
Fidelity and immortality
And whether the nations
Rush
To riches or ruin.
Because if we can't talk
Heart to heart
How can we know
If we're merely acquaintances
Or if a relationship
Is about to start?
