There was a little house upon a hill
Where I had gone to school.
The kids would walk from all around
To learn its golden rules.
On winter days a stove was lit
Its warmth caressed our hearts
Much like our teachers smile
Whose memory I haven't forgot.
There were sixteen kids within this class
Nine girls and seven boys
Our ages ran from nine to twelve
And we didn't play with toys.
On top of math and social studies
We'd read a chapter from the Book
Each one of us took a turn
As the others sat around and looked
At the end Miss Brown asked questions
About those stories we read
I remember barely raising my hand one time
When Miss Suzy jumped up instead.
She was so bright and lively
I wouldn't dare say a word.
Her face would glow with God's glory;
Her voice was as light as a birds...
The school house now has fallen
A grass mound is all that's there
But in my heart lies the memories
Of that time when it was there

Nicely crafted. Great imagery. I too get the feel of a long ago school house, with few children. Thank you for entering.

I always wondered what it would've been like to go to school back in those days. You've painted it wonderfully for me. Good luck in the contest!
