Saudade For A Precious Grandma

Missing image
A little girl of only three when you died
dear Grandma, it would be just history if
that was only what I remember of you!

But who can live with being told you are
just like her and not wish you were here
so many times over and over again!

It seems a part of me is missing! To hear
you look like her, walk like her, talk like
her. My heart cries out to have known you longer
dear Elizabeth Mary!

I do remember you, and your flowered dresses
with hydrangeas your favorite flower on black
fabric. Your gentle voice with a strange accent
from Cumberland's north country in England, as
you would read " A Child's Garden of Verses".

Never harsh, but always talking as you did to
your students at school but more personal as
I was your first grandchild, I felt I was special.

Quiet spoken, always obedient to Grandfather,
you made your presence known by your peace that
you carried with you in your heart.

I do miss you. Even writing about you brings
a sense of peace to my soul as you would
understand me because I am so much like you.

The soul ties are strong, and will always be.

Author notes

A presence has always been with me since childhood..my Grandmother who passed on when I was three. Finally I have put it into some words.

We all have memories of people fond to us, it is our way of a lasting tribute. Most people don't get monuments erected in their honor, all they get are those, who they left behind, remembering them. You have done your grandmother proud, erected a lovely monument to her.

    Thanks for this lovely read

There is an earnest warmth in your poem and you describe your grandmother well, you capture what you remember, what formed her in your memory. She sounds like she was a fine woman and yes, too bad you didn't get to know her longer, but even as it is...you wrote a beautiful poem and a lasting tribute to her.

    Well done.

Wonderful tribute to your grandmother Rosemary. I am sure not only do you look and act like her you are as pretty as she is. Three years old is an young age to remember her but I have a sister who remembers our grandmother and she was only four at the time she died. Good luck in the contest.xxxxx
