Kay & Black...-

On starless night in cold wet rain

In one headlight she bawled in pain

Cow slipped on ice with calf now breach

A roll of dice if arm would reach

A long hard pull then cow put down

This small black bull left me to frown

Once calf was fed and warmed up good

Had doubts in shed just where I stood

A girl of three said she would care

Her Grandma's plea surely a prayer

Left me no doubt all would be done

These young would sprout while having fun

They fed the calf four times a day

You had to laugh when they would play

She named him Black and shares her food

Rides on his back when in the mood

In half a year the girl's turned four

I made it clear could be no more

The calf now weighs five hundred pounds

The risk these days their playful rounds

Of Traveler fame is in his genes

But such a shame I'll miss these scenes

His time to leave and time to learn

I do believe his keep he'll earn

I hope this year for set of twins

I'll keep the steer but me for grins

A gift to Kay one heifer back

For her to play and raise for Black

Kay & Black...

Author notes

There is no place like home and for me, that is in Missouri, USA. The people make the places beautiful. There are so many places in this world where I have enjoyed being and I still intend to visit many more. This may not be what you wanted to see but it is what comes to mind for me.

I love kids and go out of my way to see they succeed while having fun. Mikayla is a bright 4 year old girl who lives with her grandparents in Missouri. She loves living on their ranch and with the help of her grandparents did a remarkable job with this bull calf. He is a Black Angus bull calf out of a “Traveler” artificially inseminated cow. This story is a true one and Black, born mid February, 2008, is to be added to the breading bulls of my ranch in NW Missouri when he is 18 months old. He may well reach 1800 to 2000 pounds when fully grown.

    Please read the rules.

I am so sorry but I have to DQ your poem. This contest is for poems that don’t already have a trophy. Poems that have punctuation. Again, I’m sorry but your poem doesn’t qualify.

This is just wonderfully beautiful and sentimental. Nothing finer than a young one taking care of an underdog. Responsibility is taught as well as kinder thoughts and care for life.

I cannot believe this piece only won an HM. It is perfect in rhyme and flow, and the message is truly priceless. Wonderful writing my friend. ~Pamela

Absolutely delightful. Was there no saving the mom? of black that is ... the cow, I mean, bull...
I have friends that are Amish and dairied. I helped out but drew the line with the artificial insemination...

Daddy played at raising beef. He kept them around along time. One cow made 15 and died in the field. You could hear her hips when she walked by.

In Cossatot, I was catching the mudbugs, tearing them up to feed the little fishes that swarmed in front of my snorkel mask. So I was baiting with them too. Judge kinda went off on a tangent. But hey. I want you to see what you want in my poetry. I am trying to help readers remember dreams worth writing down.

    All the best.

      No saving her

after we pulled the calf she slipped on the ice while trying to kill me and broke her leg. I put her down.

You get some really good genetics with AI. You just do your research and pick appropriately. I am bidding at the autions here against the Amish. Tough but friendly group.
