Mother ailed for want of his smile
Her heart was crushed and spirit drawn
her mind had gone into exile
She wandered lost from day to day
and picked her path as best she could
I held her hand and wiped her tears
for I too missed that man so good
But mother's health would not be calmed
and one foul stroke her strength did take
I wept as an infant at her bed
as the doctor to me gently spake
'She will not last the night' he said
and tried to ease my growing pain
Alone I sat beside her head
losing a parent once again
I thought of how they grew up poor
but gave me all they had to share
and then of my graduation day
and how they neither would be there
Then pleaded I in desperate prayer
'Oh let her live to see that day
that I might show her of her worth
and honour her in my own way'
The prayer did end abruptly as
a feeble voice cried out 'I'm cold'
and runnung for blankets in tears of joy
my mother again I'd have to hold
The doctor marvelled at the change
and nurses in their wonder stared
as health returned its vital blush
to one, the voice of death had heard
It was beyond their reasoned mind
to understand; my simple prayer
had reached the ears of one on high
and found a God so loving, there
That he would hear such a one as I
when lost in my Gethsemane
How can I say I have not faith?
In truth he gave her back to me
Author notes
This poem was penned quickly in response to this competition, but it is of a real life event. My mother lived another few years and saw me graduate. I had barely closed my prayer in Jesus name when she spoke. There is no other reason for this, there can be no coincidence here, I was heard. I had my maiden name inserted as a middle name on my degree to honour my wonderful parents.

This is sad but also a sweet understanding of the word "faith" from a personal experience. I like the different take you have done with the quote. I'm glad you added to the author's notes, it helps me to understand. I'm sure it was a very hard time for you.
Good luck in the contest!
Hugs!!!
