The Sofa

The Sofa
by Shirley Heelas

Way up in the air,
the smiling guy,
straw protruding from his jacket sleeves,
sits so proudly on the sofa.
Flames begin to curl upwards,
slowly, gently, caressing its base.
Hot tongues of red and orange lick up around the flowery cushions,
teasing this proud gent’s legs as they inch towards him.
Many guys have smiled such a smile on that sofa.
It has witnessed and cushioned fifteen years of hot embraces.
But it knows too many secrets.
It holds, and refuses to let go of, too many memories.
So as a new bride I sign its death warrant.
The flowers are blackening.
The wooden frame is creaking.
At the moment of release the guy falls sideways and gives in to the heat of the moment.
The sofa finally receives its own fiery embrace.

Author notes

This was a flash fiction piece I wrote for a contest, but was told it was more like poetry.

I think this is very unique and original and the idea in this write is quite delicious! I love this line, "It has witnessed and cushioned fifteen years of hot embraces." Really very good! I see you are new here and I would suggest you read others poetry on here and comment and they will read your work in turn. I learned that when I first joined. Nobody was commenting on my poetry and I was told I had to comment to get comments. I think this poem would look better written in more poetry style lines than story style lines like this:
    Way up in the air,
    the smiling guy,
straw protruding from his jacket sleeves,
    sits
    so proudly on
    the sofa
Not necessarily like I did it, just a suggestion to make it more pleasing to the eye. If you can find other free verse writers on here and read them you will see what I mean. You have talent! Pam

    Welcome To Allpoetry

    Hi FreeSpirit53

I must say this poem is very different to anything i've read here so i applaud you for creativity. I like the bit where you wrote that it knows too many secrets because that is so true especially if a sofa has been in the house for over 10 years like your one has.
Great work really enjoyed the read.
    Keep writing

      Hi Andy,
Thanks for the inspiring comments. I'm enjoying the site so far. Trying to find time to read lots of the other poetry on here! ... And to keep writing. But that's life. Thanks again.
