The smell of death pervades the air
darkness falls, the moon hidden from sight
the enemy sleeps without a care
Keep on the watch, from dark to light
Do not let your thoughts stray
darkness falls, the moon hidden from sight
Tom my friend has passed away
A stray bullet, quickly, suddenly death
Do not let your thoughts stray
Two of us left here holding our breath
Sick to the stomach, hearts crying in pain
A stray bullet, quickly, suddenly death
No home comforts, nothing to gain
A war torn earth, humanity lost
sick to the stomach, hearts crying in pain
Who cares, tell me who is counting the cost?
A war torn earth, humanity lost
Still, the smell of death pervades the air
and the enemy sleeps without a care.

Impressive!
And so very deserving of the trophy. This is amazing; I could really feel the pain, death and utter coldness of war through your words. I could taste your words, so to speak. Wow!
"Who cares, tell me who is counting the cost?
A war torn earth, humanity lost
Still, the smell of death pervades the air
and the enemy sleeps without a care."

Very well written
The flow was amazing and lines were not forced. Your format is mastered in the form. My fav. lines were:"No home comforts, nothing to gain
A war torn earth, humanity lost
sick to the stomach, hearts crying in pain"
Thanks for coming to my contest and looking to read more of your poems. Kendhal22
