The girl didn't hear the voice until it was inside her head, slithering up her spine, making her flesh crawl with fear and excitement. It had been three days since Angelo had plucked her from her bedroom, and those days she had spent all her life at home miserable, lonely, dreading school like a disease; seemed so long ago. The new world she had created from the pages of a journal became reality, every sentence, description, object, and character spilling off the pages. Holly found herself lost in a ghostly white valley edged with massive, skeletal black trees full of beautiful gold-speckled birds, a sparkly koi pond, whip cream white clouds, cotton candy soft grass and, of course, a parade of angels and huge winged men that were so gorgeous their bodies seemed to have been chiseled from the very mountains.
"Is this not paradise, honeybee?" Angelo asked her, smiling his seductive smile that made her heart melt every time. He walked along the edge of the koi pond, hand locking on hers, fierce blue eyes trained on the scraggly black trees ahead. It took a moment to realize that dark-looking dream forest had never come from her journals.
"Angelo?"
"Yes, lovely?" He practically purred.
"Where did those black trees come from? I never wrote about those...and the birds, what's all that about?"
Angelo sighed. "You see, Holly, when you create a paradise as perfect as this there must be a shadow realm. The Dream Forest is known as your "Grim World", a world that has been molded from all your deepest, darkest, most secret thoughts and sensations. It is an absolute priority for us to venture into the Grim World in order to keep anything bad from getting in here. Do you understand?"
Holly's gut clenched up with dread, but she managed to nod. "I think so. Do we like, have to fight witches and shit?"
"No witches", Angelo laughed, drawing her so close she could feel his bulging bicep, hard as rock, brush against her softly. "Vampires, gremlins, trolls, toad princes...you know, the whole package. This may seem like your average Chronicles of Narnia fairy tale, but believe me, it is not anything as innocent. We will have to fight, draw blood, kill, and maybe even become imprisoned in the Grim World-only I will never allow that to happen to you."
"Maybe we should like, get weapons?"
"I have a friend who is an elf and one of the finest archers, he will provide us with all the tools we need to defeat Grimlocke."
"Who is that?"
"The Lord of the Grim World, your own most omnious creation." Angelo ducked under some spidery black branches, his hair and skin glowing eerily in the pale light, grunting quietly as he pushed away a slimy, moss-covered rock to reveal this orb-like portal pulsating with bright purple electricity. In the heart of the Dream Forest was the Orb of Life, Holly remembered in her fantasy world, and this orb acted as a portal that transfered one to different parts of paradise. In her mind the portal was a livid red color, small, and emitted beautiful music that flowed like the silver swan-populated rivers across the valley. Why did it look so different, like an open wound bleeding harsh purple light?
"Angelo", Holly said suddenly. "I don't want to go in there, it's dangerous. You could get hurt."
"Nonsense." Angelo pushed her gently towards the pulsing portal. "We must do this, or who knows what can creep into your dreams? Your paradise can be corrupted, destroyed, made into a carnival of evil and torment, a never-ending torrent of suffer. I have to do this, Holly."
"I don't want to lose you..."
"You won't", Angelo wrapped his arms around her, feasted on her lips so intensely she felt a deep throbbing between her legs, the feel of his perfect mouth drinking her up like wine was enough to make her do almost anything. Damn, he was a freaking good kisser!
"See you on the other side!" Angelo sang, and was sucked into the portal in a flash of silvery light.
