The story of a shattered self.

There atop that royal stage
stored in perfection's eyes,
you placed me in that big glass jar
and waited to hear my sighs.

You showered me in endless love,
gave riches for me to wear;
yet when I yearned togetherness,
somehow you just weren't there.

So there I sat in loneliness
and dreamed I'd fly, be free,
but that regal throne soon crumbled-
left a sad and broken me.

And now my soul still lingers here,
but my sorrows are well hid...

beneath the weight of your regrets
on the day you closed the lid.

Author notes

Hi Alix, I'd be very grateful if you could read my poem and tell me your opinion. I'm sorry it's not a little more cheerful, but it's what the picture said to me...I hope it's okay.

It's very ok...I liked your poem very much. To me it means deal with today, tomorrow may not come. Am I correct?

I visited the picture that prompted this poem and I think your interpretation is interesting and vivid. I am reminded of Maya Angelou's "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings". I appreciate that this poem was written with an 11 year old girl in mind because some of the phraseology is more simplified than your usual style. Still it is filled with imagery and and pathos and you definitely thought outside the box. Good luck in this contest. Peace, Liz
