On Stage

Command performance, all players in place,
marinated, sliced, shredded, diced,
kneaded and baked, parboiled and chilled,
devilled, chopped and generously spiced.

Fussed over for hours in night-before prep,
the players know they'll be stars of the show,
whether at backyard picnic or barbeque
or to ultimate tailgating they will go.

THE CHARACTERS

"Alfresco," the grill-man's dependable friend,
powered by gas or charcoal briquettes,
massive and manly, well equipt,
or tailgating portables, star featurettes.

"Cheddarwurst," protein's down-to-earth representative,
leading the way for original bratwurst, beer simmered,
huge ground beef patties, skewered steak and veggies,
butter topped tenderloin and famed knockwurst.

"Cheddarwurst," also heralding trays of Wisconsin cheeses,
aged cheddar, muenster, spicey pepper jack and bricks,
the world famous cheddar cheese food spreads,
fresh cheese curds, and for the grill side, mozarella sticks.

"Crusty," represents crunchy whole grain loaves of super-bread,
filled with cheeses and herbs, topped with seeds,
hearty caraway rye, dark pumpernickel, honey wheat
and rugged buns, just what a plump bratwurst needs.

"GoodCarbo" stands tall for homegrown produce,
layered, party ready, in big serving containers,
bedded with crisp romaine, contrasting itself, light aginst dark,
accented with zippy red and green peppers, flavor maintainers!

"GoodCarbo" sprinkles prickly, pungent rosemary.
hearty sage, tender yet spicey basil, bright tasting mint,
mixes in the crunch of the healing cruciferous broccoli and cauliflower,
shredded carrots and deep red cabbage, sliced leeks a subtle hint.

"GoodCarbo " saves for last the irresistable tumble of tomatoes,
cascades of bam-pow cherry, slices of large juicy reds,
adds flavor enhancing lemon wedges, bottles of olive oil,
vinegar, homemade ketchup and horseradish mustard to turn heads.

"Spud," hot roasted, along with sweet corn, soaked first in cold water,
then grilled, stand out among the healthy carbs, but can't resist
being doused in Wisconsin Grade AA butter, chives for the bakers,
crowd pleasers, both the grill-man and partakers insist.

"NanaBanana" crashes the tailgate scene, from out of State,
out of Country, along with the grapes, kiwis and late strawberries,
to enhance Door county cherries, Wisconsin apple orchards' early harvest,
and to beg for chilled containers of whipped cream from local dairies.

"The Bevs," last to be mentioned, for this is a Wisconsin party
and, alas, the State has a reputation known all too well.
Ice packed coolers hold the various beverages which swiftly
appear in the grasp of tailgaters, but that's another story to tell!

The "Characters" have given their all, presented themselves fairly
as the raw ingredients, but know that waiting in the wings
are a host of others that didn't make it to the buffet today,
pastas, chicken wings, and cranberry treats that another week brings.

Through the ease of the Internet, Wisconsin summer sausage,
Mortadella, Braunschweiger, bratwurst and all imaginable
cheeses can be found by the touch of the keys, delivered to your door
if your taste for these shippable products becomes unmanageable!

If the reader wonders why "GoodCarbo"
has three stanzas, consider who is
assembling this piece---the artist
who is enamored of fresh produce!

"Food! That basically says it all for me!
Lot of work here, tons of writing and cool artwork, I admire your perseverance, as well as your skill...but as much as I admire those, it's your good taste in food that I admire most.

I must beg your humble apology. I have no idea how I missed your entry. Just my ignorance I guess. But I have come to remedy my omission.

Cheddarwurst, bratwurst, knockwurst, anything wurst, you can put them on my plate! And cheese...the muenster...haven't had good muenster in years. Will pass on the pepperjack but if you could also bring a little Monterey Jack sans the pepper, I'd take that!...ooh and Mozzerella sticks! Where's the veleeta?

I might even have some veggies...if you fry them in bacon fat! Nah, I like all food, I'd fill a second plate with a little of each kind.

So much food you mention that I'd like right now...getting indigestion just thinking about it...a small price to pay for such a pleasure.

The artwork of course is cute! And soon I can maybe steal one.

Next time just send a gentle reminder, like, "Hey goofball, get your butt in gear and go read my poem that you insolently have ignored...you worthless, imbecilic, besotted, pusillanimous pudding-head!" Maybe leave off the "pudding-head" that is being a little unfair.

As the great German Sturm und Strang poet Der Golem once wrote,

    't weren't right
    the over-sight
    I go now to redeem!"

I'm pretty sure he said that.

This is a brave cast of characters for a memorable party! I notice you mention Wisconsin several times, it must be a kind of gastronomic paradise! I have heard of the fine dairy products and the orchards and fields. All goes together for a wonderful day. I enjoyed your presentation of food in this heroic light.

Hi, Margaret! Nice to see you at this party.

It is a way of life here, for some,
the art of the tailgate party.
Prepping all the food to take it
to a parking lot outside a sports stadium.

For some it turns into an all-day event.
When my buddy drove to work early
Monday morning, some early birds were
already set up with their grills and coolers
at 7:00 a.m. and the Packer game did not start
      until 6:00 p.m!

      The entire state, but particularly
the northern regions are quite a tourist
      attraction, still open countryside,
      festivals, art events, good camping.

      Thank you, Margaret

What fun, Aesthete! Pass that famous Wisconsin cheese, will ya? Yummy stuff!

(btw... my bell peppers didn't do squat this year either. I had 3 or 4 decent ones growing and was waiting on them to get a little bigger and someone stole them right off the poor plant! *sigh* Tomatoes were small, but quite tasty. The yellow pear ones were prolific!!! I bet I've gotten at least 200 off of one plant... with at least 50 still on there right now

Hi, Carma! Glad to see you here!

Lucky you with the yellow tomatoes.
Scanty peppers here, too. Mine are
in containers, so not as prolific
as in the ground. actually the hot
peppers did better than the larger,
      mild ones.

But how those peppers like to be
in the mix with pasta and WI cheese,
and a generous picking of herbs!

Escaping from Alaska, fearing he may be shot and skinned, a moose continued on his long trek thru the countryside. So in need of food, he crashed the tailgating party at Lambeau field. He found those who sympathized with them, as he explained he was trying to kick the habit, and send that smiley girl back to Alaska.

    Dear Aesthete M-C,

I'm here at last to view aghast so many healthy treats
with yummy looking veggies and such tantalizing meats
and I can hardly wait until I bog into the sweets.
(Lord knows what's going to happen to our waistlines and our seats!)

Apart from the descriptions and the virtual masterpieces
I can hear the tummies rumbling from the plentitude of cheeses
but, if it is permitted, may I ask of you one question:
"Do you have some alka-selzer to combat my indigestion?"

An absolutely BRILLIANT Non-Entry! It's a pleasure to eat with you. Thankyou for this superlative contest.

      Joan, step right up!

But you will have to imagine yourself
outside a stadium before a Green Bay Packer
football game, where tailgating is an art
      practiced before each home game.

While brats and beer may be the stars,
      not surprisingly, many parties sport
      gourmet foods in abundance,
      amidst the aroma of barbeque!

Passing you a green and gold

      to a tailgating buffet.

      Hi, Darlene!

Yes, my challenge now is to accompany any words
I write with my own drawings and photos. I never
had the time before, since when I arrived here
for a few months last early FallI there were a number
of health situations I was attempting to overcome,
      and still painting.

Since all the reps our business had eventually all retired,
the work is much less. At first is was the scary thing, "oh, no, draw again!" For the liner brushes
and the wide fan brushes had been my tools of expression for years. So, back to pen and ink, starting with
improvisational doodles and sketches, calligraphy pens,
      and then onward!

      Dynamic new avatar you have!

No, Maseur. The originals were so comfortable,
but the little plastic nodules broke off easily
and after three months I needed to start on a new pair.

Evidently the complaints led USA distributors to
discontinue them. So I went to an online Pharmacy in Australia to fine them. Horror of horrors, they
changed the design had sent them to China to be manufactured.

At first I complained to myself, for they weren't
as comfortable---but they last a year---and "break in" easily, and don't leave a trail of little nodules!

                      Hah! Smiling!

                      And it was just recently
                      I discovered
                      the Sea of Arafura
                      while twirling the globe,
                      pouring over the atlas.
                      Aha(!) came to mind.

I love the banana! Looks like Carmen Miranda!
You made me hungry, and the tea I'm drinking now tastes like water (always does in Yem's opinion)
Wonderful display of verses and images!!!

      "AnnaBanana" styled after Carmen
      would give you her necklace,
made of orange, lime and lemon slices
      to add to your tea.

      I love Carmen Miranda movies!
Had put high heeled pumps on the
      character, but ended up putting
her in flip flops since the banana
had no ankles---and it was more
      appropriate for tailgating!

Just read about Carmen's last appearance,
it was on the Jummy Durante show. She danced,
felt out of breath, finished the program,
      gone the next morning.

But her big smile remains in the minds
of anyone who saw a filmed performance.

Food! That basically says it all for me!

Lot of work here, tons of writing and cool artwork, I admire your perseverance, as well as your skill...but as much as I admire those, it's your good taste in food that I admire most.

Cheddarwurst. I came so close the other day to buying some.

Hey, Yem. A topic close to your heart---
or your taste buds and stomach!

Have to be careful with the cheddarwurst---
too much heat and the cheese melts out!

The hold-up in getting it finished was
the scanning, after I finished the drawings.
Couldn't just click on bucket's new sizes,
for they left out a few. It was all that
squinting, entering numbers till they came out
right, that was the stresser. And then reading
my handwritten notes as to which code was which.

Was considering dialogue between the characters,
until struck by the thought they would be discussing
their own demise! Hmmmm---have I been reading too many
      "Shocking Tales of Horror?"

Since I tried things out at Betty, first, rocky
was wondering if the caption thread was getting
more foods to keep Ima company!

      Yay, perseverance!

And now I can paint in peace since this has been "born."

hahaha, i'm not sure what to say, maybe you've gotten a little to into your food, but i guess that's not really possible. quite a story you've got here, and the drawings set it off, well done!

      Hey, it was my privilege
      to choose the theme---
      and what better unifier
      than food---something
      everyone likes,
      a happy topic.

      And take note, loper, under
      "GoodCarbo," the tomato/romaine
      combo, the assortment of herbs
      growing---mint, rosemary,
      my now-struggling basil,
      and the small number of
      peppers produced!

I'll take that repeating any day!!!!!

      They were quite the rascals,
trying to get them sized correctly
after I drew them and scanned them!

And, of course, food is fun.

      Thank you, Pisces!
