There was a time when I would
stay up late; drink all night.
with nothing to show for it
save a headache in the morning’s light.
Now, I’m glad to say,
all this has ended,
as by pen and keyboard
I’ve been befriended
and,with the million thoughts
that fill my head,
I spend the midnight hours
composing prose and poetry instead.
No alcohol’s allowed to cloud my brain
as words fall into place upon the page;
some of love and of its gain;
others dark and full of rage.
No headache now after a sleepless night,
for writing has become my great delight.
