Curled in the throes of pain,
twisted in and out
and then, suddenly,
limp again, muscles relaxing
sliding out from between each other.
Mouth open in a warning hiss
that comes out more like a sigh
caught by the wet air
and tossed away like garbage
in a world of sound.
You wanted just a dry spot,
buried safe among the warm earth
where the rain could not touch you
but you could sleep and wait
until home was safe again.
But as you journeyed closer
from the heavens came pain,
crushing, cruel, and pitiless,
leaving you stranded
with only the rain to comfort.
So you took your last breath
struggling against the agony
only to be found
all too late
by one who would have saved you.
Author notes
Just a little poem to blow off some steam.
Today my roommate found a snake and called me out to get it. Unfortunately, someone had stepped on it deliberately, so it was in it's last moments by the time I got to it. Once the seizing was over, we moved his body over to the field. Still, it's put me in a rotten mood all day.
