And rose regally to his feet
To dominate the Senate floor.
Shiny fabric stretched ‘cross his seat.
“My dear honorable colleagues”
Began his stentorian drone,
“We must end these minor intrigues “
“It’s up to us and us alone.”
Continuing his oration:
“My most esteemed contituent,
Who has long served our nation
The great, noble Seymor Spent …”
He sipped lemoned ice water
From his place on the Senate bench.
“Would have us honor the Sea Otter.”
(Breaking wind, silent, deadly stench.)
Stomach straining against his vest,
“Who among this body is not moved?”
Hand passionately upon his chest.
“The taxes are pennies”, he soothed.
He grandly gestured at them all.
“I implore you, support this bill!
Give people Otter Day this fall!
Let it be our children’s will…”
Children… Ah, that sweet new au pair
In her youthful naked splendor
Without his wife, she’d come to share
Moments so sweet and so tender…
Confident. His words were thrilling.
He needed to wrap up this vote.
It is now time for the killing.
He ended on a splendid note:
“We’ve all seen this happy critter,
Swimming the backstroke, pups atop,
It would be so sad and bitter
If this holiday were to stop.
His great address was over now
Silence filled the Senate Chambers
He mopped his red and sweaty brow
And proceeded with the disclaimers.
On he went, he knew that he must
Or yield to others the power floor.
He finally sated his ego’s lust
And strutted toward the chamber door.
Two old senators watch him pass.
“What did that pompous old fart say?”
“ I don’t know, he is such an ass,
I’ll be damned if I’ll vote his way.”
Author notes
I kind of had fat Teddy in mind when I wrote this. The picture is a non copyrighted political cartoon of Boss Tweed.

This poem shows many things, such as greed, however it also shows that even if something is good (or helpful) it probably will not pass due to a) who is speaking, and
their friends.
Thank you for entering,

Thank you for reading and commenting. I am glad you enjoyed the poem. There are two sequals as well.

Super
This a character you need to keep building on making him into Super Senator spending at the speed of sound or something. He perfect in his pompous ways. Cool beans dude! Write on, Boog

I am glad you liked it. He is going to remain without part designation. Part Boss Tweed (republican), part Teddy Kennedy (democrat) - all greedy and self serving.
Thank you for reading and commenting.

This is superb. Wonderful write! Very entertaining and spot on on the prompt.
I don't agree with your political views; I think McCain is the best Republican candidate in many years, and a very good and decent man, but the prospect of putting Sarah Palin in, a heartbeat away, scares the bejesus out of me. Her views on the environment, on how we should conduct foreign policy, on abortion, and her tone is so far right that I cannot support McCain. The pendulum has swung to the right so far in the Bush years that it must swing back the other way to get us away from extremism.
We must agree to disagree on the politics, but your poem is outstanding. -

Thank you for reading and commenting. I agree with you on McCain. I also think that Obama is a good man, but sadly lacking in experience. I also think that, due to the lack of experience, he will be beholding to the democratic power elite, which is as bad as the republican power elite. I don't think he could be his own man.
I think Palin is and odd choice. I lived in Alaska for a while and I believe that her view on the environment and state's rights are a reaction to the way that the federal government controls the state. She is probably as odd a choice for McCain as Biden was for Obama. I think with the choice of Biden, Obama's campaign is doomed this time around. Give him 4-8 years and he may do much better.
I do agree with you on the pendulum needing to swing back. I just don't think it needs to swing as far as Obama. I am very glad he got the nomination. I believe the Clinton crowd to be the most corrupt pack of jackals foisted on the government since the Teapot Dome Scandal.
It will be an interesting election either way. I respect your opinion whether I agree with it or not. Thanks for the comment. I love political debate.

Oh my goodness
Well its the same it seems every year for generations yet much progress made so will this be the year when it just might be a woman will save the day . It could have been Hillary but she ran for the top job and heard from the public not . Yet I felt she gave up far too soon and let her apponents and Sahra Parnnel take on the resume . Who woud have thought.. But I think its far overdue to have a woman for vice president or president for their is not one job company or organization that the women dont do most all the organizing and paperwork its time we are not held back and show how we also can organize and budget the country as well

I think it is a good idea to have a black man on the ticket and a good idea to have a woman on the ticket. However, I am not sure that Obama is ready yet. I absolutely do not agree with his politics. I think the Democratic ticket is upside down.
Palin has grit. I like her style. I have followed McCain for years. He is not Bush III. He is going to set Washington on its ear.

Very creative and well-done, I love the storytelling style and the great rhyme. Teddy indeed, you hit the nail on the dollar sign.

Had I actually made it factually about Teddy I would have been very sarcastic. I am hoping one day that Massachusetts will be free of his stranglehold.

This is an excellent satire. Nice solid rhyme, and a great flow to it as well. Clever and witty. Think you hit the prompt very nicely.
I did have a couple questions:
"“My most esteemed contiuent,"
- Should the last word be constituent?
"He mopped his read and sweaty brow"
- Should it be red instead of read?
Good luck in the contest, and clappy dudes!

Thanks alot. It serves me right for not using spell check. Typos are the sign of a sloppy mind. Mine is sloppy.

oooh....I REALLY liked this poem. Especially with the Presidential election coming up. Your words were spectacular and what a great way to describe a political cliche! VERY NICE...

I am glad you liked it. I personally think that both candidates stand for change. I think McCain has a better chance of pulling it off due to experience. Most of the politicians in both parties are fat arrogant B......ds.
Thank you for reading and commenting.

haha, Otter Day sounds like a grand idea to me!

Thanks. See? I can rant too. I just rant about different things. That is what old farts do. They rant about the government on a full time basis.

I am glad you liked it. It is sarcastic, but most politicians dont deserve alot of respect. The are fops and egotistical braggarts.

Superb
What a great satire, of politicians to read right after two political conventions. I chuckled all the way through. Imagery, rythm and rhyme are just fine.
Thanks for sharing. -
-
Thanks. Most of them, on both sides of the fence, are absolutely full of themselves. They only think about their own grandeur.

Yes, I tend to agree. Some even want to cut funding for social services programs, to reduce budgets, yet why don't politicians cut their own salaries by 50% first; before making budget cuts in programs we citizens need?
I don't think they would ever have the guts to do this.
