Street Poet

The madman laughs
to bridge the gaps in his mind

too fast, too far apart.

He laughs at the doctor
whose patients are beyond
and at peace.

He laughs at the priest
whose flock has scattered,
lost or at peace?

He wishes for death
and settles for the ink
of insanity.

    John;

    The madman laughs
to bridge the gaps in his mind

One wants to say, that bridges are broken
so he laughs "at the gaps..."

"beyond"--where is that exactly? perhaps an image would help, in this instance, at peace is suspect.

On the ending, that fleeing often results in death,
an example would be Hart Crane, His fear of the loss of the gift drove him deeper into madness until finally he leaped into the sea

this is witty and truly a brilliant write. the beginning gave me the most settling and unsettling feelings all at once:

    "The madman laughs
to bridge the gaps in his mind

    too fast, too far apart."

That's bloody brilliant. I really appreciate also the impact of this. I picture the priest and the street poet in a quickly stumbling battle of right and wrong. Though God is God, the ink and the pen are a man's cherished weapons. cheers
