an olive leaf on the slaughterhouse floor

it meant that
she was stupid
in an Italian kind of way

nurturing scientists
with the simple sigh
her fingers landed on their shoulders
like sunbath

but rei wouldn’t have dared
let any sound slip

except fire
cracking the a.m hours
and hands
that prayed beyond the blur of irony.

it always seemed
to be about chubbiness, failing
grades, and asking things
that everyone else knew -
until you felt it between the girls.

such warmth
as if kami eagerly lingered in their eyes.

Author notes

Sept. 2, 2008

"Now I get it! You have meatballs on the sides of your head to go with the spaghetti inside!" - Rei (Raye) to Usagi (Serena)

Sailor Moon fans will get more out of this, but I think anyone can relate anyway... I know I can.

The "kami" is a reference to the kami of Shintoism.

I think that Jess can get lost in this poem and become Sailor Moon whenever she reads this. I love it and I am not that familiar with the character except for what Jess has described to me. C

      HAHAHAHAHAH yes I can...
But it's Sailor Mars I wannabe. Sailor Moon doesn't have hair that I'd fancy, at least on myself.

This must win gold for making my candyland sweet as hell!

What does the 'lo' mean for "lo mucho"? Is "me gusta mucho" not grammatically correct in espanol?!

Oh. "I like it a lot." "I like a lot" wouldn't be grammatically correct then.

The "lo" isn't there in Spanish, though. If you have to say it, it'd be, "eso me gusta mucho" (this). 'cause "gustar" requires that its predicate be the thing you like.

                wow, yes it actually is

funny, I knew that grammar rule for a long time but only now that you say that is it that I see it in a new light.

    Sailor Mars is my favorite.
It used to be Sailor Jupiter, but Sailor Mars had THE best hair...long, black and with purple streaks that looked natural...well, for an anime character LMAO.

    That first stanza is amusing...
I love the way you write--almost no punctuation & not capitalizations.

    "except fire
    cracking the a.m hours
    and hands
that prayed beyond the blur of irony."
That is SOOO interesting & it relates to Sailor Mars so well, what with the fire & the praying & the irony...yes, that sounds like my Rei.
You have managed to capture her in a poetic way that isn't silly or goofy at ALL, and I love you for that.

"until you felt it between the girls." makes me think of the close connections the Sailors all had...

    God, this is awesome!!
I'm bookmarking so I can read this whenever I want to be Sailor Mars...LMAO.

Aww thank you! Those were my intentions exactly! Yeah, I'm not good with humor so it was a challenge to write something soulfull from that funny quote, but I kept thinking how Rei and Usagi always act so ironically to each other, but deep down I always felt they were the closest connected.

Yeah...!!! Do you remember that episode when they were at the theme park (evil, of course ) & Serena (or fine, Usagi ) jumped onto Rei's shoulders and pulled her hair...the hair-pulling was hysterical to me.

I'm going to go into class sniffling and with the theme song to Sailor Moon in my head now - how am I going to concentrate on the Rescorla-Wagner equations?! I blame you - this is fantastic - I love the tone and the way you have consistently maintained it throughout - the ending is sublime the beginning made me laugh so hard - this is just awesome good luck in the contest!

    Keep writing
