that mermaids kidnapped you as a child
and buried you in the sand
for forty days.
Then you crawled out,
salt-coloured, plastered with crystals,
and found your way home.
You told me you left twenty heartbeats there,
by mistake,
and that you can never love me quite enough
because your heart is always
just a second behind mine.
Author notes
Right. This probably counts as a prewrite. So please DQ it if it is. Basically, a while back I wrote a much longer poem, which I now don't like much. Your quote, rather than inspiring an entirely new poem, made me look at this poem in a different way, go back, take a tiny piece of it, and edit into a poem to stand on its own. I thought that it MIGHT not count as a prewrite since a] it's not the same poem and b] that poem is not posted on this site. However, I understand if it does.
