the classroom inside my respiratory system

one day, perhaps long ago,
I inhaled a chalkboard -

lessons I hadn't learned
spread dust through my trachea,
forming phlegm when mixed
with gulps,

& raised hands threatened questions
that regurgitation
couldn't answer.

it got caught in my chest;

your words felt chalky -
though the eraser was nowhere
in sight to forge
what you meant.

you were that student, who exhaled
sweat & heavy breaths
as you clumsily repeated
what was written

like it was what I wanted
so maybe I would feel for you
& tell you.

but you were simply scribbling
on the surface:

tearing your fingernails through
the blackboard in my lungs.

Author notes

I did find an image hiding about that could inspire me somewhat.

Cleverly written...Imagery so alive...I will never look at a chalkboard the same way..though I hate scratching on your surface...It drives one crazy..You have such potential with your mind to create exceptional imagery! This is a classic and rather humorous way you have penned this one..Bookmarked!

Wow! No wonder you won gold - this is such a very creative image, it has a lot of intensity and feeling. I think "your words felt chalky -
    though the eraser was nowhere
    in sight to forge
what you meant." is the most poignant stanza and a great transition to using second person, but I love the whole poem.

    This is ...

undoubtedly the most original poem here, and if it were up to me, you'd be carrying home the Gold.
