.familiar.ground.

Well if this isn't familiar ground,
god
only knows what is.
The sounds, the smells, the
tastes.
The pure unaltered vision of chaos.
I have been here countless times before.
You'd think that would deaden the pain.
but it doesn't.
And it doesn't make this burden any
easier
to bear.

but after a while you start to question
if a lighter burden is really what you want.
Would an easier time in life really
make things better?
Would happiness and joy really be all they're cracked up to be,
if the light shone without shadows?
If you could fall in love and come up unscathed,
would we still revere those who love
selflessly?
Would there still be a way to love
selflessly?
If all the risks in life were eliminated
would it matter who we chose to date?
or what we chose to do with our lives at all?
How would we be different?
WOULD we be any different.

So you start wondering,
is this familiar ground
really all that familiar?
In reality the answer is no.
for in every pain there is a pleasure
we have not known before;
that of overcoming it.
And each victory is made that much greater
by the horrors we defeat.

Hardships don't always have to break us.
Strength doesn't always have to come from bliss.
In fact it is in the hardest times
when we are strongest.

"that which does not kill us will serve to make us stronger." there's a lot of truth in those words. i'm not sure if nietzche saw the full impact of his own musings. at any rate, there's a lot of truth in these words as well. well done.

Indeed very profound, so many questions you ask made me try to answer them even though I really could not find an answer...
"for in every pain there is a pleasure
    we have not known before;
    that of overcoming it."
I am realizing that so very much, more and more lately, pain and happiness or joy just mingle so well together.

It's true--scary, but true. And wierd too, that sometimes hard things are for the best. Somehow, risk is what gives life flavor--even if its a bitter flavor. Awesome write, and great questions in the second paragraph.

I like how this poem starts out sort of angsty, but really ends in a sort of hopeful "light at the end of the tunnel". Very nice write.
