You have every reason.
To be reviled and defend yourself.
Exhaling in angered contempt.
But please show Earthlings mercy,
In spite of our short sighted lament.
So many hearts cry out to you,
For our homes of man and beast.
Know we've pillaged and plundered
Seas and shorelines in destruction,
Brought about our own defeat.
But not unlike the haughty child,
Who knows no wrong from right.
We've overstepped in senselessness,
In angering Nature's power,
Plead of you, release us from your might?
Humanity is at last awakening,
To it's ugly greed and willful ways.
Calm your wrath that is the storm,
Grace your wild offsprings with,
Calmer, peaceful brighter days.
Author notes
This maybe doesn't stand a chance. But I'm sure it's a shared by all plea of mercy.

this definitely DOES stand a chance ... no doubt ...
I am delighted that you have dared to "speak to the hurricane" with so much understanding, compassion and humility ... your voice so perfectly and impartially expresses the tangible facts of us ignorant earthlings having gone beyond boundaries ... it neither defends nor accuses, nor excuses ... it is rather like a loving mother knowing that her child is just a child ...
I truly hope that our united thoughts and prayers will reach the "Great Decisionmaker" and let's just keep hoping and praying ...
thank you so much for this wonderful contribution,
maa

This goes beyond a contest, I believe this shows awesome insight, as peace can prevail over might and anger. Well done.

Great piece suseann. I do hope that Hurricanes Gustav and Hanna pass without destruction. Fingers crossed! I've heard that Gustav is heading for New Orleans, like it needs more bad stuff to be dealing with!
I haven't seen anything about Hanna though - but I hope it doesn't affect you.
Good luck in the contest.
Great poem/prayer.
best wishes as always
