August

i hear a man’s watch beeping
in the apartment building across the street,
like they hear the baby,
me crying,
my life

meaning:

this obligation will not leave

it is windy, late summer,
the curtains pressed in the window,
a wasp bumping the screen

we did not fall from the 23rd floor,
i have a stack of books unread, a sink
of dishes, and the dog is shedding

there will be more today’s
tomorrow

like thirst in a speck of boat,
the middle of the ocean,
undrinkable

no amount of time will be enough
of you

i'm really happy

This is great, anchored in life where happiness doesn't demand more than acknowledgement.

~smile~ I'm glad your author notes tell us you are happy. I would be hard-pressed to draw that conclusion from reading this poem, in spite of it sounding an awful lot like the last few lines of the series "The Good Life". At any rate, your words always draw me in. I liked the details you give of the scene and the metaphors you've used. That guy must have some loud watch!

yeah, that's why i added the note.. sometimes happy is a little painful. and looks like something else. on an ordinary day.

and his watch isn't that loud... our buildings are just really close. and no one has air conditioning, so our windows are all open. it's crazy.

I think this is amazing. And I can honestly say I've felt this happiness, too, among dishes & piling laundry and everything turned upside down in life...lol Children are wonderful, aren't they? You have the right attitude...beautiful imagery, I think you will read this poem in years & remember this day & exactly how you felt..

    wow

i really didnt like this at all untill the end, it seemed like random mumbling to me, way to pull it together and make it a hell of a write. this is really honestly amazing.
