How can they call it civil war
when man takes arms against his kin?
How can they call it civil war?
Can one side truly claim a win
as brother destroys a brother
when man takes arms against his kin?
There she sits, the grieving mother
unable to withstand the pain
as brother destroys a brother.
For what comfort can still remain
as families have so much to lose,
unable to withstand the pain.
Her loving heart can never choose
to favor one above the rest
as families have so much to lose.
The battlefield is Satan's test.
How can they call it civil war,
to favor one above the rest?
How can they call it civil war?
Author notes
The Terzanelle is a poetry type which is a combination of the villanelle and the
terza rima forms. It is a 19-line poem consisting of five interlocking tercets plus a concluding quatrain in which the first and third lines of the first tercet appear as refrains. The middle line of each tercet is repeated, reappearing as the last line of the succeeding tercet with the exception of the center line of the next-to-the-last stanza which appears in the quatrain. There is a set rhyme scheme in each tercet.

all war is madness. some of it can often spread to our own families and nieghbors, we see it often in the scattered murders at schools and workplaces, but when the government condones it then it becomes chaos. How does one kill a brother, even since the
days of Cain and Abel, yet still every generation holds it share of such insanity. Your poem touches on the why and how there really is no reason to it except evil. What a great employment opportunity it would be if we could melt all of the weapons into metal that would be used to build monuments against any and all unneccesary wars. great write~~Artis

I think you've just inspired me to try yet
another new form! This is wondrous as it
flows without a single pause and keeps the
tragic questioning focused. I too, have
pondered the justifications behind any war.
But this one, brother against brother as you
say was just insanely brutal, affecting whole
generations as well as a newborn country.

So nicely executed m'dear. To put such truth into such detailed form, and to do it well, is a feat of which to be very proud. Excellent! I love the reality of this. All the mystique and pretense of war is stripped away and you portray it for the savagery that it can really be. Poignant.

Much truth here. I like the form. It's the first time I've seen it or at least the first time I've been told what form it was.
I've always found form poetry difficult. You seem to be able to write many different poems with ease. Very admirable skill.

I think you have described the difference between a good poet and a great one. Mine is a skill honed through practice and discipline. Yours is a gift from the soul which cannot be taught. Thank you for taking the time to read and comment on my work.
