Native Son

A broken home,
  Willing father
    Raised him
     On this fabled land
A small ranch
Outside Pearsall, Texas

Service in the army
College on the GI Bill
    Southwest Texas State

Even then he shared
Stories
Through song

Majestic melodies
Pouring from his soul
Spirit, sharing of the land

Ace in the Hole,
   Now world renown

Honky tonks, pretty women
I’m still right there with him
Riding with this troubadour
Since ‘75

Though Jennifer has passed on
Norma and Bubba, still tag along

So come with me,
Lets catch his bus.

We can be in
Amarillo by Mornin
Maybe Marina Del Rey
Or The Shores of Old Mexico

For he’ll be seen
Carryin Your Love With Me
Maybe we’ll even
See God Today

For this boy,
Playing beneath the mighty oaks
Became royalty

King George

This Native Son

Author notes

George was raised by his father, John Strait, a junior high math teacher. Though born in Poteet, he grew up in Pearsall. After eloping with Norma, he entered the US Army, later graduated from Southwest Texas State University.

Jennifer, his daughter was tragically killed in a car accident. Bubba, his surviving son has gone on to graduate Texas A&M University.

King George as he is known in the country music world, has more #1 songs then any other musical act in history. In excess of 55 and still adding to the list. George was the second youngest person inducted into the Country Music hall of Fame in 2006, at the age of 54. Only Brenda Lee was younger at the time of her induction.

I like the structure of the poem, the way it looked, actually. Fable land, sharing stories through song sound so good. And the use of the word 'troubadour' - unique I think.
