The color of hunger

Light of fading sun
reflects red in sad eyes
lit up golden and full of hope
with fiery flecks that burn
distended stomach
swollen over a scrap of cloth
barely concealed modesty

During the day
cracked dusty heels
tracked a maze
through burnt ochre dust
through parched remains of fields
blackened and burnt
by the fires of hate and war
She'd run
endlessly
searching for green hope
in this desolate place
gleaned already
by ten thousand others

Sun high in the sky
mercilessly beating
her head -
braided hair
and flies that don't abate.
A sparkle in the distance
a glimmer of hope
providing sustenance
providing grey muddy water
bitter to drink
and fought for
against the beasts
that once proudly
paraded across endless green pastures
Now eddies of a forgotten memory
as dust and dirt erases a past
so a new future can be invented

One
which does not include this girl-child
Wrong race, religion or creed.
Forgotten
as she lies listlessly
in a bundle of rags
Waiting for what will never come
History reinvented
by those that would know
Marginalized/Minimalised

And death
hungrily stalking
its innocent victim
stealing her soul
with the promise of food.
