No Summer Tourist #

Hot sunshine burns the grass so dry
it rustles softly in the breeze,
dries the moisture from all the soil
not sheltered by grass or trees.
    Cattle powder the surface up,
change the earth to bone dry dust,
this floating cloud and the fierce, hot sun
    dampen all of my wanderlust.

Author notes

We have just the coldest winter for years, I wonder if summer will be a scorcher.

We have just had a wet summer, I hope winter is better. Good luck for your summer. Your poem is very clever, it is achingly dry right up to the dampening of your wanderlust. Clever play on words. I can taste the dust ... I need a beer now!

Although today is a spring day, I will join you in having that beer. Keep the tonsils irrigated for when the hot weather arrives. I appreciate your comments.

You paint such pictures with your words, I was back in Numeralla in the drought, dreading a car along the road for the dust that flowed from it. Everything gritty to the touch, so hot that even a cold shower had no refreshment. And watching the clouds build up over the mountain, only to disappear. Here in the wet lands, it all seems like a dream now.

It is great to find someone who has experienced this kind of dust. For those who live in wetter climates or where all the roads are sealed this poem may seem imaginative, but its real.Your comment is much appreciated.

PS. It has been raining for about 24 hours straight. No dust at all right now.

It is coming soon, Rob. We have hot summers here and they can be a real drag. As for the wanderlust, it's still there, just waiting. Pleased I warmed up your cold day.

Another hot summer on the way and not one too kind to farmers and such, hey, Bob. You wrote this with a great sense of reality and you tell us that things are going to get pretty bad when it hits. Obviously, you have seen it much worse than i have, me living close to the city. The words are beautiful, the rhyme and flow excellent, and your knack for painting with words is brilliant. Tops!

I am hoping for a warm summer with plenty of rain at the right time for harvest etc: but; we humans are subject to the whims and plans of Mother Nature, she may have other ideas. Past experience has shown me that 45 degrees plus can be expected if the rains don't come. In celcius, that's hot. I thank you for your ability to comment with kindness and generosity. Your comments are always encouraging

I think we know it is going to be a scorcher, Bob. Dealing with it yet again will be a test for us.

A true portrayal of the times we have been through. Well painted, Bob.

I shall always live in hope that summers will be warm and beautiful. However, I expect that the sun will be hot and the rain will be elsewhere. At least this summer we have an air conditioner to help survive the heat.

    Bob

I get a vision of a piece of land that your very familiar with. Seems your pen has created a scene that one must see in the flesh to understand.

You have got that right, Bob. The piece of land I'm referring to is the place from which I have recently moved. A hundred head of cattle literally powdered the sandy soil to dust like talcum powder.Add to that a dirt road and the enveloping clouds of dust coated everything. We could close all windows and doors, dust everything and by the time you finished the second room there was a fine coat of dust over the one you had just left. It was not nice at all and I would not wish that on my worst enemy.
On the plus side the grass recovered very quickly after rain. But, there has been below average rain for about seven years in a row. Maybe this year. Where we are now does not have that problem, there is grass all over.
I appreciate your comments, thank you.
