Trail of tall cypress trees,
morning of beautyberries;
every conceivable shade
and form of August green
Air plants, giant
swamp ferns, glossy
wild coffee leaves
A woodpecker's nest;
the usual noisy blue jays,
silk spiders web
Suddenly, flash of red
..again -- a cardinal!
never seen one here before.
Armed against humidity with
insect repellent spray, bottled water;
couldn't keep myself away any longer from
These woods where I walk
with pink, pocket sized notebook
from the Dollar Tree store.
Butterflies flutter more
attracted by tubular
blossoms, red orange
Ripe pond apples
dangling above;
I want to taste one
But alas,
the green fruits are
just beyond my grasp.
Walking easily, an elderly gentleman
barely leans upon
the cane he carries.
"You should've seen this place
right after the storm, " says he.
"Oh, the birds...so lovely," he sighs.
When next from across the sea
such storm arrives, I look forward to
witnessing this beautiful sight.
Author notes
"...The only other sound's the sweep
of easy wind and downy flake.
The woods are lovely, dark and deep..."

This speaks to my soul in that it's a gentle woodland sojourn that I too often enjoy. I like the titles inclusion of someone personified to share the beauty of creation with. Designed with the gifts simplistically graced us in natures wonders.Good luck in the comp.And per your authors notes. That selected part of Robert Frost masterpiece strikes a resounding cord too. My all time favorite poem.
