The Written Word

Missing image
There are many who would much rather look
At images on screen than read a book.
A director shows you inside his mind
While a writer allows you to find
True images of love, sadness, and pain
Locked in the recesses of your own brain.

I know I must come across as a pest
To others watching a movie with zest.
Actors and actresses grace the wide screen,
But not the way my brain painted the scene.
I try not to be bored and I reply:
“The book was better; you should try.”

My grand fixation on the printed word,
To others must seem patently absurd.
In sweet love scenes it is you that I see.
Not with some actor, but right there with me.
The two of us make a much better cast
In a movie of us that will ever last.

    Breathtaking!

This couldn't have been said better. Romantic and captivating. Inspiring and beautiful. An expressive and gentle write. Thank you for your remarkably true entry and best of luck in my contest.

I agree with the rest of your comments and you, books sure beat the hell out of movies. The first time it really hit me was with Stephen King, the movie left me cold and unimpressed ... but the book scared me, or rather my imagination did
A great write and all the best in the contest.

Stephen King is the one that stands out for me as well. I don't read much horror, but his are uniquely well written. I have never been failed to be disappointed by the movie version. For years I was told how good The Shining was. My reply was how disappointed I was along with an admonishment to read the book.

Thank you very much for reading and commenting.

I am glad you enjoyed my poem. I really like to read and read almost anything. I already have 5 kids, so I need to do something else during the winter.

    I completely agree.
Books allow you to paint the scene in a way that is different and special for just the reader alone. Books let you direct the scene to your own satisfaction. As good as some adaptations of books are, in many of those movies scenes are often cut out, plots changed, or the people don't look or act how they're supposed to in your mind. To anyone who's ever read the book first and then gone to see the movie, 99% of the time they'll find at least one thing wrong or different from how they pictured it in their head.

Yes indeed. Movies are limited by length, script, humans, and technology. Some are wonderful adaptations but they always fall short.

Nice I agree. I am always telling people 'read the book, it was better'
    They never do XD

I like the thought behind this... originality in your mind is the best when it comes to art forms. Too many remakes otherwise
