since I was older, I owned three fourths of it.
we had a small unfinished wooden chair,
a small table and other things
inside our private space.
adults couldn’t get inside our abode,
because it was four feet high.
what fun to be eight and ten years old.
our playhouse.
Our playhouse was
made of unpainted plywood,
with a small window on each side.
a tar paper roof,
no more than a square,
eight feet on a side,
our playhouse.
We called this
playhouse our fort.
brother and I always tried to dress up
in cowboy hats,
furry vest, rawhide chaps,
black and white cowboy boots,
six shooter cap guns,
our playhouse.
In our playhouse,
we fought off imaginary indians,
sheep ranchers and sometimes
neighborhood kids,
sometimes asked other kids
to help defend the ranch and our town.
imaginary cattle ranchers
with a 4 acre spread.
our playhouse.
Author notes
Author's Notes: The theme of this poem are the true memories of my brother and my playhouse that my dad helped us build! What fun it was -- but that was 50-some years ago! I't's still so clear, even now!
Mom or dad took this picture of me, my little brother and my cousins and neighbors in front of our Playhouse!
The numeric address on the top of the playhouse is "2417," the same address as the real house we lived in back then!
My dad was a carpenter, so the sawhorses are in this photo, that bike was one of my first ones!
