Saying Goodbye

I had feared for this day
And the way that it would close
Sadness, pain, hurt, or rage
Or combinations of those

But it has come and here we stand
Hearts remaining in one piece
And I hold nothing against you
Although all of this has ceased

We came to the right conclusion:
You and I needed to talk
We never would have made it if
I remained there in the dark

This all was more than you could take
For now to say the least
And you managed to end it well
You ended it in peace

You and I talked everything out
Discussed the whole thing through
I came to see that you were right
T'was the best thing to do

And we held each other's gazes so long...

What's next?
A hug?
A handshake?
Too awkward.

And though I'd see you in minutes
Here we said our goodbyes
T'was so symbolic, so special
Too strong to criticize

I watched you as you left the room
Seeing a friend who'd always be there
Though I was sad to see you go
I could not help but believe that you cared

It was that look in your eye
When you said we were through...

Part of it said, "You know this is best,"
And I could not help but agree
Then, "I never wanted to hurt you."
It was so plain for me to see.

For a picture is worth a thousand words
And through your eyes, one can glimpse your soul

I thought that Goodbye would be hard
But today Goodbye felt right
I'll hide these mem'ries some place safe
Take solace in the night

This was such an amazing poem and one many can relate to. Everybody wants closure because we have regrets and we start thinking of all the "what ifs" and "whys" and we ask ourselves what is wrong with us or what is it that we did wrong.
    I loved the lines
but it has come and here we stand
    hearts remaining in one piece
    then the lines
it was that look in your eyes
when you said we were through
then I never wanted to hurt you
it was so plain for me to see

    then the last lines
for a picture is worth a thousand words
and through your eyes, one can glimpse your soul
    take solace in the night

Again this was such a wonderful write and very heartfelt.
