Changing Minds

Into the forest determined was I
for life not worth living, I went there to die
The choice of the forest, the reason not known
for lately my thoughts had simply not been my own.

Deeper I went in the mid of this day
till the trees were so thick, the sun held no sway
'Pon a log that had fallen across that path that I tread
I sat and I thought, my hands holding my head

One last review of the misery I'd known
That brought this decision so determinedly home
When still this conclusion I once again came
For nothing had altered, all remained just the same

In the darkness of night in this midday scene
I was about to end the disastrous careen
when in the midst of the dark came a bright shining light
To banish the darkness so deep 'twas like night

I heard words with no voice echo inside my head
saying "Oh my dear child no more fear, do not dread!
I see in your darkness as deep as this glen
I know what you're feeling and where you have been!"

The voice paused as if thinking just what next to say
Then an amazing thing said, just as clear as the day:
"Despite your deep sorrow, aside from your grief
I still do Love you, and promise relief!"

The voice spoke no more and in a flash went the light
returning me back to the darkness like night
But a change had occurred though 'twas hard to accept
I did something not done since a child: I wept!

I made my way home and though my life was still hard
No longer this gift did I disregard
When much time had passed and much work done by me
Suddenly I realized one day I was free

Oft thinking of the time I spent in that grove
wondering if 'twas just a dream my mind wove
Still the conclusion I reach every time is the same
Whatever the reason the result is the same!

Author notes

Take this as you wish, whether, like the protagonist, you wonder if it is of the mind or was something real from some higher power, I leave it to you to decide.
